Brier Island
Brier Island is a nature lover’s dream.
Tucked away at the end of Digby Neck, it takes two ferry rides to get there, including a stop on Long Island, and makes you feel like you’re going to the ends of the earth.
Whale watching is top among the things to do here.
Boat tours to see the whales run daily from Westport, the island’s only town, between June and October. If you can, come from July onwards, when humpback whales abound. Giant blue whales sometimes say hello but they’re a rare sight for the lucky few.
Dolphins, porpoises, seals, sea turtles and bluefin tuna also call Brier Island home, as do a wealth of bird species including atlantic puffins and gannets.
Back on land, head out for a hike on the network of walking trails that cross the island. Outside Westport, there are no paved roads and much of Brier Island can only be reached on foot.
For accommodation, budget travelers will want to head for the Brier Island Hostel, while those hunting for more luxury and fine dining should consider the Brier Island Lodge.
