The Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic in Lunenburg on Nova Scotia’s southern shore is one of the province’s best museums and a must-see for visitors to the area.
There’s easily enough to keep you and the kids busy for an afternoon.
In bright red buildings on the Lunenburg waterfront, the museum features an aquarium with live salt and fresh-water fish.
You can also learn about everything from rumrunning to whaling and lobster trapping to traditional crafts like quilting and rug hooking.
Step outside to see the Bluenose II schooner, a key part of Nova Scotia history, or relax with a film in the museum’s theatre.
Guided tours are available and the whole site is wheelchair accessible. There’s a restaurant and outside picnic tables.

Admission fees: Adults $9, children 6-17 $3 , family $22.
Opening hours: Seasonal. Tuesday to Saturday, 9:30am to 7pm. Sunday and Monday, 9:30 am to 5:30pm. (July and August). Monday to Sunday, 9:30am to 5:30pm. (May 19 to June 30 and September 1 to October 14). Wednesdays, 9am to 4pm (October 15 to May 18)
